Wednesday is an American coming-of-age supernatural mystery television series based on the character Wednesday Addams by Charles Addams.

Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, it stars Jenna Ortega as the titular character, with Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, Naomi J.

Ogawa, Christina Ricci, and Moosa Mostafa appearing in supporting roles. Four out of the eight episodes of the first season were directed by Tim Burton, who also serves as executive producer.

It revolves around Wednesday Addams, who attempts to solve a murder mystery at her new school.

[2] Burton was previously approached to direct the 1991 film The Addams Family and was involved with a cancelled stop-motion animated The Addams Family film.

In October 2020, he was reported to be helming a television series, which was later given a series order by Netflix. Ortega was cast in part to represent the character’s Latina heritage.

Ricci, who had played the titular character in the 1991 film and its 1993 sequel Addams Family Values, was asked by Burton to join the series in a supporting role. Filming took place in Romania between September 2021 and March 2022.

Wednesday premiered on November 16, 2022, and was released on Netflix on November 23 to predominantly positive reviews from critics, who praised Ortega’s performance.

[3] Within three weeks of release, it became the second-most watched English-language Netflix series.

It received two Golden Globe nominations: Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy for Ortega.

It also won four Primetime Emmy Awards, while receiving nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. In January 2023, the series was renewed for a second season.

Plot

Wednesday Addams, infamous for her dark wit and penchant for the macabre, finds herself expelled from her previous school under rather peculiar circumstances.

In retaliation against the bullying of her beloved brother Pugsley by the boys’ water polo team, Wednesday decides to take matters into her own hands by introducing live piranhas into the school’s swimming pool.

Unsurprisingly, this bold act of defiance leads to her swift expulsion.

With their uniquely Addams-esque parenting style, Gomez and Morticia Addams decide that their alma mater, Nevermore Academy, would be the perfect fit for their daughter’s unconventional needs.

Nestled in the eerie town of Jericho, Vermont, Nevermore Academy is a private institution renowned for catering to monstrous outcasts and peculiar individuals.

It’s here that Wednesday is enrolled, amidst an eclectic student body ranging from vampires and witches to werewolves and otherworldly beings. However, Wednesday’s arrival at Nevermore Academy is far from smooth.

Her cold, emotionless demeanor and defiant nature immediately clash with the school’s norms and its formidable principal, Larissa Weems.

Uninterested in conforming to societal expectations, Wednesday instead finds solace in exploring the mysteries that surround her new environment.

To her surprise, Wednesday discovers that she has inherited her mother Morticia’s psychic abilities, which manifest as eerie premonitions and glimpses into the supernatural.

These abilities prove to be both a blessing and a curse as she delves deeper into the enigmatic history of Nevermore Academy and the town of Jericho itself.

As Wednesday navigates the complexities of teenage life—friendship, first love, and self-discovery—she becomes embroiled in a local murder mystery that has haunted Jericho for decades.

The mystery, intertwined with her own family’s past, challenges Wednesday to harness her burgeoning psychic powers to uncover long-buried secrets and confront dark forces that threaten the academy and the town.

Throughout her journey, Wednesday forms unexpected alliances with fellow students who, like her, are outsiders in their own right.

Together, they unravel the sinister plot that has ensnared Nevermore Academy and threatens to plunge Jericho into chaos.

Along the way, Wednesday grapples with her identity, embracing both her Addams heritage and her emerging abilities as she matures into a formidable young woman.

Against a backdrop of Gothic architecture, mist-shrouded forests, and moonlit graveyards, Wednesday Addams evolves from a misunderstood outcast into a formidable sleuth and protector of the peculiar.

Her quest to master her psychic powers, thwart a monstrous killing spree, and solve the mysteries that haunt her family is a journey of self-discovery and supernatural intrigue.

In the end, Wednesday not only uncovers the truth behind the shadows that loom over Nevermore Academy but also learns valuable lessons about acceptance, loyalty, and the enduring power of family—even one as delightfully macabre as the Addamses.

Her story is a testament to the resilience of the human (or rather, Addams) spirit in the face of darkness and adversity, proving that even in the most peculiar of circumstances, one can find light and belonging.
